Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)

What is the EFMP?

The EFMP is a program offered by each service to support families with special medical and educational needs throughout the service member’s career. Family members should enroll in EFMP when a qualifying condition is diagnosed. Each branch has its own EFMP and enrollment process.

The Exceptional Family Member Program is designed to support military family members with special needs. All branches of the military offer EFMP, and each Service includes a variety of personnel, medical and family support functions under the EFMP umbrella.

  • The portion of EFMP support provided by the Air Force Medical Service is known as the Exceptional Family Member Program-Medical.
  • Exceptional Family Member Program-Family Support is the community support component offered by the Airman & Family Readiness Center.
  • EFMP-M works with the Assignments branch at the Air Force Personnel Center and with installation Military Personnel Section to provide comprehensive and coordinated support for the assignment actions our families frequently experience. This is accomplished through a family member travel screening during relocations.
  • All three functions work with other military and civilian agencies to enhance the quality of life for families as they relocate around the world with their sponsors.

Additionally, EFMP-FS, EFMP-M and EFMP Assignments strive to ensure Air Force sponsors are assigned in locations that support both the accomplishment of the mission and the well-being of families. EFMP-FS and EFMP-M also work to ensure Department of Defense civilians are employed in locations that meet the needs of the mission and of their families.
